This weekend’s college football slate isn’t as good others we’ve seen in 2020, though it is highlighted by a massive matchup on Saturday night. Don’t worry, college football fans. We have one more week before the Big Ten gets its season started, so we’ve got plenty to look forward to.
As for Week 7, here’s a look at the best game of the weekend in addition to a sleeper game and the game you should be avoiding at all costs.
Best game
In a bit of a weak slate overall, this one is obvious, and it might be the best game of the entire 2020 college football regular season. We’re talking about the Alabama Crimson Tide taking on the Georgia Bulldogs. It’s so big it’s getting the Saturday night on CBS treatment with kickoff starting at 8 p.m. ET. As of Friday, Alabama is expected to be Nick Saban-less as he tested positive for the coronavirus.
What do oddsmakers believe Alabama will do without Saban on the sidelines? Well, the Crimson Tide are still 4.5-point favorites according to DraftKings Sportsbook. Kirby Smart has gotten so close in recent years to taking down Alabama, and he has another chance as the Tide have won this matchup five times in a row.
Sleeper game
It’s strange to see neither team with a number next to its name, but our sleeper game is going to be a battle of unranked teams with the UCF Knights heading on the road to play the Memphis Tigers. Despite both teams coming off losses, plenty of eyeballs will get to watch this game as it will be on ABC at 3:30 p.m. ET in an afternoon time slot with isn’t all that appealing.
UCF last played on Oct. 3 and lost as the No. 11 team in the country to the Tulsa Yellow Jackets 34-26 despite holding a 23-5 advantage late in the first half. Playing its first game in nearly a month, Memphis lost to the SMU Mustangs 30-27 on Oct. 3 with a late field goal. Despite both teams heading in with a losing streak, this is essentially a knockout game for the AAC, and the winner will still have as good of a shot as any to win the conference.
Worst game
I generally try to stay away from bringing this label to a game hardly anybody will be watching regardless, but the North Texas Mean Green vs the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will far and away be the worst game available during Saturday’s slate. This will be played at an awkward time slot at 5 p.m. ET. There isn’t a ton of major competition during this time, so if you want to watch the Week 7 game of futility, it can be seen at CBS Sports Network.
North Texas is coming in with a record of 1-3. In its losses, the Mean Green have given up 65 to SMU, 41 to Southern Miss and 49 to Charlotte last week. North Texas does have a win so far, and it came against Houston Baptist despite allowing 31 points to an FCS opponent. As for Middle Tennessee, it was hammered 42-0 against Army on the first Saturday of the season but found its first victory on Saturday with a 31-28 win over Florida International on the road. Through five games, quarterback Asher O’Hara has seven interceptions and six touchdowns.
