2020 Skincare Trends: Ingredients - Cosmopolitan Philippines

There are tons of ingredients included in the skincare products in the market right now, but there are only a few that really stuck with us this year. We're talking about the ones that have been the star in thousands of ~*glowing*~ reviews with amazing before and after pictures!

With the rise of maskne problems and not being able to see our trusted dermatologist in person, Google was our best friend this 2020. We found ourselves turning to the search engine to help us zero in on the skincare ingredients that can help us fix our complexion woes. Ahead, we list down six buzz-worthy ingredients that made their way into our routines *and* hearts this 2020:

  1. Glycolic acid

If you're not yet well-versed in the world of AHAs and BHAs, glycolic acid is one of the first few you'll know about. It is a type of AHA exfoliant that works to loosen the bond that holds dead skin cells together. This skincare superstar also promotes cell turnover, which helps reduce discoloration and smoothen out acne scars over time.

  2. Hyaluronic acid

For your ~*glowing skin*~ goals, you'll do your complexion a BIG favor by incorporating hyaluronic acid in your routine. It's famous for its ability to bind collagen and moisture—in fact, it can even hold 1,000 times its weight in water! Aside from its hydrating properties, it's extremely gentle and can work for different complexion types.

  3. Niacinamide

Niacinamide is godsent if you deal with acne scars due to breakouts or dark spots caused by prolonged sun exposure. It works with the natural substances in your dermis to reduce dark spots, correct uneven skin tone, minimize fine lines and wrinkles, and strengthen the skin barrier. You'll also be glad to know that it helps in soothing angry pimples, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and healing properties.

  4. Retinol

Retinol, also known as vitamin A, is the first kind of vitamin that has been proven to have anti-aging effects by strengthening the epidermis and preventing collagen from diminishing. It also has the ability to treat acne, due to its role as a comedolytic (aka it can clear out clogged pores).

  5. Collagen

There are a ton of famous skincare ingredients in the beauty community, but none of them are as sought-after as collagen. The market is heavily saturated with it, too—from products to supplements. It promises to grant you a soft, bouncy, and supple complexion that can rival that of your fave K-drama star! ;)

ICYDK, our body actually *produces* collagen on its own, but this naturally decreases as we age. Using collagen-infused products, however, can replenish our bodies with this much-needed ingredient!

  6. Turmeric

If you're tired of the usual blemish-busting skincare ingredients like niacinamide and salicylic acid, we recommend going plant-based and trying out turmeric. Yup, the popular spice used in Indian and Thai dishes also has great benefits for acne-prone skin! Its major ingredient, curcumin, is said to have *powerful* anti-inflammatory effects that can soothe irritation and significantly reduce the size of pimples.
