Best fantasy football waiver wire pickups for Week 14 - Sporting News

gubukdadan.blogspot.com

There were a lot of big performances on Sunday, but you won't find all of those under-the-radar players among the top Week 14 fantasy waiver wire pickups and free agent adds. Maybe earlier in the season we would've responded more strongly to Baker Mayfield's and Derek Carr's huge games or Alfred Morris's, Dan Arnold's, Chad Hansen's, and Donovan Peoples-Jones's breakout stat lines, but at this point in the season, it's all about consistent opportunities and matchups. Running backs Ty Johnson and Cam Akers and wide receivers T.Y. Hilton and Keke Coutee figure to have more value for the fantasy playoffs, and a QB like Jalen Hurts is slightly more intriguing than the up-and-down veterans mentioned above.

Our full free agent list features plenty more players who could see consistent usage and/or favorable matchups going forward. At this point, unless a player is an injury replacement, he can be viewed as a glorified streamer, and as always, we also have a bunch of one-week recommendations at QB, TE, and D/ST, which can be found at the end of this list.

WEEK 14 FANTASY: RB Handcuff Chart

When it comes to using high waiver claims during the fantasy playoffs, it's all about whether you have a glaring need at a certain position or you're trying to prevent your opponent from getting a streamer. Even if you have a bye in Week 14, it's fair to jump in and claim a player who figures to still be seeing significant touches and has a good matchup in Week 15. While RBs like Johnson and Akers have the most value in general, if you're set at RB, then there's nothing wrong with using a high claim on a D/ST or even a QB, depending on your need.

It's win-or-go-home time, so don't hold back and always be looking ahead. Picking up players before everyone else is thinking about picking them up is how you win fantasy championships. -- Matt Lutovsky

Unless otherwise noted, only players owned in fewer than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues considered.

  • We've been telling you for three weeks to pick upAkers, but he was still available in 48 percent of Yahoo leagues entering Week 13. Expect that number to sky rocket afterAkersled the Rams backfield with 21carries and 72yards in Week13. He also had 22 yardson his lone reception andscored for the third straight game. Hehadseveral more goal-line carries but wasn't quite able to get in t he box a second (or third) time. Despite the relative inefficiency, workload is important this time of year, and it appears as if you can trustAkersto get double-digit touches every week going forward. The Rams have decent rushing matchups against the Patriots and Jets the next two weeks before a tough one against the Seahawks in Week 16, butAkersis still worth a high waiver claim based on the upside he provides. --ML

  • Johnson handled the bulk of the Jets RB carries in Week 13 after Frank Gore exited because of a concussion suffered on his first carry of the game. Johnsontook full advantage of his opportunity, rushing 22 times for 104 yards and a scoreand addinganother 13 yards on two catches. With La'Mical Perine (ankle) out at least one more week and Gore likely questionable, at best, for next week's game against the Seahawks, Johnson has plenty of potential value as a high-volume back who's also an adeptpass-catchershould the game turn into a blowout. If Gore remains out longer, Johnson would get similar matchups against the Rams in Week 15 and Browns in Week 16. --ML

  • It took him long enough, but Hilton is finally getting in sync with QB Philip Rivers. The veteran pass-catcher set season highs in catches (8), targets (11), and yards (110) in Week 13 against Houston. He also scored his second touchdown in as many games. Indianapolis has favorable passing matchups the next two weeks (@ Raiders, vs. Texans) before getting a Week 16 tilt against a Steelers defense that has also had someissues with wide receivers this year. Hilton looks like a must-add for the stretch run in the 56 percent of Yahoo leagues in which he's available. --ML

  • Coutee was on a lot of fantasy owners' radars once Will Fuller was suspended for PEDs earlier this week. He paid immediate dividends with an eight-catch, 141-yard outing against a tough Colts pass defense. Perhaps just as noteworthy, he led the Texans in targets (9). Coutee should continue to see frequent looks, and while his upcoming schedule doesn't look great (@ Bears, @ Colts), both of those defenses have struggled lately. Coutee is still in play as a WR3, especially in PPR formats. -- ML

  • With James Conner on the COVID list in Week 12, Snell was able to rack up 93 yards on 19 touches while serving as the lead back for the Steelers. He's set to start again in Week 13, and though Conner could come back in Week 14 and beyond, Snell is worth owning as he has been productive when Conner has been absent. At worst, he's a very good handcuff. At best, he can be an RB2 if Conner misses more time. The Steelers play the Bills, Bengals, and Colts to close the fantasy season. --JC

  • Higgins is emerging as the Browns' No. 2 receiver and had his best game of the year against the Titans in Week 13. He was targeted nine times by Baker Mayfield (second most only to Jarvis Landry's 10) and caught six passes for 95 yards and a TD .Higgins has good deep speed and should have a chance to make some big plays moving forward. The Browns have a tough Week 14 matchup upcoming against the Ravens, but they're playing the Giants and Jets the two weeks after. If you need receiver help for the fantasy playoffs, Higgins could certainly get the job done in those contests. --JC

  • The Bears were run-dominant against the Lions in Week 13, and while David Montgomery led the way for the team, Patterson got involved, as well. Patterson got 10 carries and turned them into 59 yards and a TD on the day while adding a four-yard catch. It looks like Patterson will have a bigger role in the backfield with Mitchell Trubisky starting, so feel free to add him and consider him as a potential flex in a great matchup against the Texans' league-worst run defense in Week 14. --JC

  • Shepard has been stuck at 52 percent ownership for a few weeks now, but he deserves to be higher owned. Even in a game that he had just one catch and 22 yards during, he saw six targets, good for the second most on the Giants team, and caught a two-point conversion. He's clearly New York's No. 1 wide receiver and should have better games going forward, particularly in favorable matchups against the Cardinals and Browns the next two weeks. --JC

  • Agholor had just four catches for 38 yards against the Jets, but there were still encouraging signs for the Raiders wideout. He saw 11 targets, second on the team only to Darren Waller (17), and he got open for what should have been a long touchdown but Derek Carr just overthrew him. Agholor should have a chance to put up some solid numbers, and though the Colts defense has been good this year, they have struggled against WRs in recent weeks. Agholor will be a good flex play in that matchup and can probably be started against the Chargers in Week 15, as well. --JC

  • Lazard was second on the Packers in receiving yards (50) in Week 13 and saw four targets, which ranked third on the team. Lazard is a big-play threat, and with games upcoming against the Lions, Panthers, and Titans, he should be a rock-solid WR3 the rest of the way. --JC

  • Perriman only caught one pass for 22 yards against the Raiders, but he still saw four targets, which was second to only Jamison Crowder (five catches, 47 yards, two TDs). Perriman had averaged 78 yards and a TD in his previous three games, so he should have a chance to put up better numbers against a Seahawks defense that has allowed the most fantasy points to WRs this year. --JC

  • Mims had two catches for 40 yards against the Raiders and nearly found the end zone early in the contest. He also had a two-point conversion. He saw just three targets and looks to be behind Breshad Perriman and Jamison Crowder in the WR pecking order, but he should still see enough targets to be relevant, especially in blowouts. In Week 14, the Jets are playing the Seahawks, who have allowed more yardage to WRs this year than any other team, so Mims could have a shot at a breakout game in that matchup. --JC

  • The Chargers trailed constantly against the Patriots and had to throw a lot in Week 13. That gave Guyton plenty of opportunities to produce. Guyton was able to put up two catches for 38 yards, but more notably, he saw seven targets, which ranked fourth on the team. Next week, he gets a matchup against a Falcons team that has allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to WRs on the season. He's a boom-or-bust flex play but is worth a flier if you need WR depth. --JC

  • John Brown (ankle) is on IR for the Bills, and Davis has stepped up in his absence. In three games without Brown this year, Davis has logged nine catches for 148 yards and a TD. He should continue to put forth solid, flex-level production if Brown is out, though the team's Week 14 meeting with the Steelers will be a difficult one for him. --JC

  • Jonnu Smith (knee) was out of action in Week 13, and Firkser was the main beneficiary of that absence. Firkser was targeted seven times and caught five passes for 51 yards. While he didn't catch a TD -- MyCole Pruitt was able to grab one during the day -- Firkser should have a chance at a TD in future weeks if Smith continues to miss time. The Titans will play the Jaguars in Week 14, a team that has allowed the second-most FPPG to TEs this year (10.1), so Firkser could end up being a top-10 play. --JC

  • Kmet appears to be emerging as the top TE for the Bears. The second-round rookie saw a team-high seven targets and turned them into five catches, 37 yards, and a TD while Jimmy Graham saw only one target on the day. Kmet gets a solid matchup against the Texans in Week 14, so he can be added as a potential streamer, especially with him showing good chemistry with Mitchell Trubisky. --JC

  • Reed has seen six targets in back-to-back games for the 49ers, and in Week 14, he gets to take on a Washington defense that has allowed 8.2 fantasy points per game to the position. Reed should have a chance to be a borderline TE1 as he looks to impress against his former team. --JC

  • Thomas has a tough matchup against the 49ers in Week 14, but he has seen at least four targets in every game this season. Washington plays the Seahawks and Panthers in Weeks 15 and 16, so Thomas could be a starting option in those games. And even against the 49ers, he can be trusted as a lower-level streamer in PPR formats. --JC

  • Schultz has averaged six targets per game this season and gets one of the most favorable matchups for tight ends in Week 14. Schultz and the Cowboys are taking on the Bengals, who entered Week 13 with a league-high 718 receiving yards allowed to TEs on the year, good for the most in the league. Andy Dalton should continue to look Schultz's way, making him a prime streamer. -JC

  • Rudolph disappointed his owners against the Jaguars by only seeing two targets in a game where the Vikings favored Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson heavily. Rudolph has had some issues performing well with Thielen in the lineup, but Rudolph is capable of putting up decent numbers and had been averaging 4.7 catches and 53 yards per game in three contests before the game against the Jaguars. In Week 14, the Vikings are playing the Buccaneers, who have allowed 8.2 FPPG to TEs this year, good for 12th-most in the league. Rudolph could be a nice bounce-back candidate and decent streamer or DFS value play. --JC

  • Much like Rudolph's performance against the Jaguars, Akins' numbers against the Colts don't look good. He saw just three targets and caught two for 10 yards. That said, the Colts are one of the best defenses against TEs on the year while the Bears, the Texans' Week 14 opponent, have allowed 10 FPPG to the position, tied for the third most in the NFL. Akins should be a solid streamer, especially with more targets available in the Texans offense in the wake of Will Fuller's suspension. --JC

  • Hollister is the top receiving TE for the Seahawks and gets to take on a Jets team that just allowed a two-TD, 200-yard game to Darren Waller. Hollister isn't anywhere close to the player that Waller is, but he could certainly be a solid streamer in a good matchup. --JC

  • Rivers had been averaging 291.8 passing yards and two TDs in his previous six games leading up to Week 13. Against the Texans, Rivers was able to continue his hot streak with 285 yards and two TDs. In Week 14, the Colts are taking on the Raiders, who have allowed 20 FPPG to QBs this year, good for the ninth most in the NFL, so Rivers can be started in that matchup. --JC

  • After a half-plus of ineffective play fromCarsonWentz, the Eagles pulled him and finally went with Hurts in Week 13. The rookie passer played much better thanWentzand had a couple of nice deep-ball completions. Hurts finished the day with 109 passing yards, a TD, an interception, and 29 rushing yards. He could end up being a solid streamer in fantasy because of his rushing floor -- provided that the Eagles opt to start him moving forward. The Eagles play a tough Saints defense next week, but against the Cardinals and Cowboys in the last two weeks of the fantasy season, Hurts could draw consideration as a legit streamer. --JC

  • Trubisky may not be the sexiest QB to trust, but has four passing TDs in his past two starts and is averaging 254.5 passing yards in those contests. The Texans, his Week 14 opponent, have allowed 19.4 FPPG to QBs so far this year and just let Philip Rivers total 285 yards and two TDs against them. Trubisky could find similar success. --JC

  • Darnold just logged a three-TD game against the Raiders and finally has his full, healthy receiving corps at his disposal. The Jets are going up against the Seahawks in Week 14, and Seattle has allowed a league-high 24.9 FPPG to QBs this year. Darnold could do some damage in that matchup, so he's not a bad streamer if you're in a bind. --JC

  • Tagovailoa had a career day against the Bengals, finishing with 296 yards and one TDon the day. The Dolphins will get a difficult matchup against the Chiefs in Week 14, but that should mean that Tua will be throwing a lot to keep pace with Patrick Mahomes and Co. He's a bit of a risk since the Chiefs rank 19th in FPPG allowed to QBs (18.6), but Tua can be trusted as a mid-level streamer.-- JC

  • Bridgewater and the Panthers had Week 13 off to get healthy and prepare for their Week 14 matchup against the Broncos. Over his past five games, Bridgewater has averaged 228.6 yards and two total TDs with 17.4 rushing yards to boot. Bridgewater should have all of his weapons at his disposal, with Christian McCaffrey's return pending but expected, so he will be well positioned to put up some points and yards on a Broncos defense that has been merely decent against quarterbacks this year. --JC

  • Mayfield put up absurd numbers against the Titans and led the Browns to 38 first-half points with four TDs. That will make him a hot commodity on the waiver wire, but it's worth noting that he is playing the Ravens in Week 14, so he's not a recommended start in those games. However, if you're streaming QBs, Mayfield is worth adding given his strong Week 15 and 16 matchups against the Giants and Jets. --JC

  • No NFL team has turned the ball over more frequently than the Broncos. Before their game against the Chiefs, the Broncos had 26 turnovers on the season and had allowed 10.2 FPPG to defenses, good for the second most in the NFL. The Panthers could take advantage of this and can be trusted as a solid streamer in Week 14. --JC

  • The 49ers are getting healthier on defense and did well to limit a dynamic Rams team to just 20 points in Week 12. Washington ranks bottom 10 in both yards per game and points per game this season, so the 49ers should have a chance to be a top-10 defensive unit this week. -- JC

  • The Giants started Colt McCoy against the Seahawks and couldn't move the ball on offense at all. Whether McCoy starts or the sack- and turnover-prone Daniel Jones (hamstring) returns to action, the Cardinals should have a chance to slow down the Giants and their bottom-five ranked offense. --JC

  • So far this season, Washington has averaged 3.3 sacks per game and sports the No. 1 pass defense in the NFL. They are taking on Nick Mullens and the 49ers in Week 14, so Washington can be trusted against a backup quarterback that has been turnover prone this season (nine total turnovers to just seven TDs). --JC

  • The Titans defense had generated 16 takeaways entering Week 13. The Jaguars had 16 turnovers on the year entering Week 13. The Titans do allow some yards and points, but they will have a chance to make some plays against an offense that is starting its third different QB of the year (Mike Glennon). --JC

  • The Texans are taking on the second-worst offense in the NFL, as the Bears have averaged the second-fewest yards per game this season and rank bottom-five in scoring as well. Houston doesn't have the best defense, but they should be able to pressure Mitchell Trubisky and potentially force some turnovers. --JC
