The Secret To Anti-Aging And Why Clean Beauty Brands Are Sourcing Their Ingredients From Latin America - Forbes

I come from a line of Colombian women who have chosen to age naturally. Looking at them, you wouldn’t believe that my mother and both grandmothers have never subscribed to the world of botox, fillers, face lifts or laser treatments that women in their age bracket do to stay looking young. My mother scoffs at the prices I pay for luxury skincare. “Just wash your face with soap and eat well,” she says, belittling my 7-step skincare routine. There is certainly something to eating well, as it’s no secret that your diet will impact your skin, and having privileged access to the world’s freshest ingredients in their backyard, made that easy for them.

For years, Latin America has been the beauty industry’s secret treasure trove for clean beauty and skincare. As the most biodiverse region in the world – with the Amazon sweeping 40% of South America alone – it is home to the largest number of active natural ingredients rich in nutrients that help promote healthy skin and reduce signs of aging. While not all natural ingredients make for effective skincare, Latin America contains ingredients rich in fatty acids that help our skin retain moisture and keep it looking healthy. Below, a few of the best clean beauty brands sourcing their ingredients from LATAM.

Joaquina Botánica

Adhering to the strictest standards for clean beauty, Joaquina Botánica, which will launch in January by industry veteran, Giovanna Campagna, uses formulas powered by botanicals indigenous to Latin America. Partnering with leading chemists in clean beauty innovation, the brand has curated the region’s most potent superfruits and distilled them into results-driven skincare. “As the brand is inspired by my Colombian heritage, a core pillar is curating the most potent and compelling ingredients native to the Latin America,” says Campagna. “Latin America is the world’s most biodiverse region, so it is uniquely well-positioned as an endless source for powerful and innovative ingredients.” The brand started with superfruits like camu camu and maracuja, among other vibrant and unusual botanicals for its first product launching soon. Ceremonia

Babba Rivera launched Ceremonia to celebrate the richness of Latin culture. “Inspired by the rituals I grew up with, alongside a new generation leading the way towards a more sustainable future, Ceremonia provides a new-age perspective to hair care for all,” says the founder. “We believe the harmony of nature is the most powerful ‘ceremonia’ of all and pride ourselves in intentionally curating natural ingredients from the hearts of Latin America.” The clean beauty brand uses raw ingredients straight from nature, like babassu oil for scalp health, patua oil for intense hydration, maracuja oil to promote shine and cupuacu butter for deep nourishment. Other ingredients include aloe vera, açai oil, caster oil and chia see oil, all intentionally curated and sourced from Latin America, offering rich and clean haircare formulas that actually work. “Mother Nature offers some of the best kept secrets to beautiful hair,” shares Rivera. “Our ingredients have each been chosen for their unique hair benefits-boosting shine, hair strengthening, increasing moisture, reducing frizz, deep nourishment- and together offer a cocktail of nutrient-rich benefits bottled into modern formulas for all hair types.”

Sol de Janeiro

While Brazilian brand, Sol de Janeiro’s products are developed in the US, their ingredients are sourced from sustainably certified suppliers in Brazil with a commitment to protecting the Amazon and the planet. Inspired by her own upbringing in Brazil, the brand’s founder Camila Pierotti uses ingredients born in the Amazon and the rainforest – many of which can be found in the country’s cuisine, like açaí, coconut, passion fruit and sweet bananas. “At the heart of Sol de Janeiro [skincare] you'll find Brazilian Beauty Secrets that harness the power of potent ingredients from the Amazon Rainforest,” says Pierotti. “Our signature blend of Brazilian body-loving ingredients are rich in benefits; a body-loving cocktail of cupuaçu butter, açaí oil and coconut oil.” The brand has also just created their triple Brazilian butter blend which is coming soon to their newest hair innovation. Inspired by the richness and nutrient density of cupuaçu, they decided to dive deeper into other sustainable rainforest ingredients that could even more thoroughly enhance hair. Their findings led them to murumuru and tucumã plants. “They both have incredible essential fatty acid and nutrient density but with a different makeup than cupuaçu to give hair even more balanced nutrition,” adds Pierotti. “Together, these three powerful Brazilian butters - murumuru, cupuaçu and tucumã - are packed with essential fatty acids for deep conditioning, smoothing, shine-enhancing and frizz-fighting benefits.”

Tata Harper

Vermont-based, Colombian born Tata Harper has long been a reliable leader in natural and environmentally-friendly skincare, free from GMO and synthetics. While many of her ingredients are grown at her farm in Vermont, she also supplies a great deal from all over Latin America. From Brazil, she sources purple clay complex, which contains 4 mineral sources that help absorb oil and dirty build up to cleanse skin without over-drying, murumuru butter and cupuacu seed butter which provide a surge of moisture to revitalize and nourish skin and acai fruit oil, a nutrient-rich oil that replenishes the skin with vitamincs C and E, ferulic acid, and omega-6 and -9 fatty acids. From her home country of Colombia, she sources organic raw sugar which provides spa-strength exfoliation to smooth skin and texture. Rosehip seed oil she sources from Chile, as it is a natural source of retinoic acid-like activity to promote skin regeneration to help minimize wrinkles. Finally, from the Peruvian amazon, she uses sach inchi oil, an antioxidant-rich nut that helps fight free radicals, fortifies skin and is a powerful source of vitamins A and E, omega fatty acids and amino acids.
