The top skincare ingredients shoppers should look out for in 2021 have been revealed.
It's no surprise that most of us have all gotten on top of our skincare routines during lockdown because there is not much else to do- and what better way to start with some crucial ingredients specific to our skin.
LOOKFANTASTIC have analysed the search growth of over 30 skincare ingredients to put together a definitive list of ones to watch, and try, in 2021.
Using data from Google, they took a deep dive into which beauty buzzwords everyone has been searching for in 2020, focusing on those ingredients that have risen to fame over the past year to give a list of ingredients predicted to be the big ones of 2021.
1. Alpha Arbutin : For safer skin-lightening
Alpha Arbutin has seen a massive 410% growth over the last 12 months. Extracted from bearberries, blueberries, and cranberries, Alpha Arbutin is a safer alternative to skin-lightening than hydroquinone, which has been banned in Europe.
This ingredient is great for fading acne and other scarring as well as pigmentation from UV rays.
2. Azelaic Acid : Anti-Inflammatory properties
Azelaic Acid has seen a 309% increase in searches over the last year. It is a naturally occurring acid found in grains such as barley, wheat, and rye. It is gaining popularity because of its amazing antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which make it effective in the treatment of acne and rosacea.
Azelaic acid is also able to prevent future skin issues by cleaning the bacteria from your pores that would cause acne breakouts.
3. Niacinamide : Acne saviour
Made famous by TikTok sensation Skincare by Hyram , searches for Niacinamide have increased by 234% over the past 12 months. It is a form of the Vitamin B3 and is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties which are great for severe acne sufferers, particularly those that suffer with papules and pustules.
It has also been known to reduce redness which eczema sufferers will be pleased to hear.
4. Ascorbyl Glucoside : Antioxidant that boosts collagen production
Ascorbyl G is the new Vitamin C. This ingredient has seen a growth in popularity by 213% over the past year and is giving Vitamin C a run for its money.
It is known to be less potent than Vitamin C meaning it is suitable for all skin types. Its main benefits include neutralising skin-damaging free radicals, boosting natural collagen production and inhibiting the production of pigment to fade and prevent dark spots from sun damage and scarring.
5. Açaí Oil : Ultra Moisturising
Açaí Oil has had an 125% increase in searches over the last year and with its ultra moisturising properties, it may be one for those dry skin sufferers to take note of.
It is a very powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient that is also an effective moisturising oil used in products that target and treat dry and cracked skin, eczema and psoriasis.
You can find ALL of these ingredients in products on the LOOK FANTASTIC website- with brands such as The Ordinary, Kora Organics, La Roche-Posay and tonnes more.
Handy tip, just type in which skincare ingredient you want in the LOOK FANTASTIC product search bar and it will give you everything you need.
