Women's Golf Enjoyed Best Season In History - Mean Green Sports

DENTON - The North Texas women's golf team enjoyed a banner season in 2020-21 by accomplishing several program firsts, including claiming the program's first conference championship and the program's first individual conference champion.

The Mean Green were led by fifth-year senior Lauren Cox, who took advantage of the NCAA waiver allowing an extra year of competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic cancelation in the spring of 2020, and junior Audrey Tan, who won the Conference USA individual championship while leading her team to the team championship. The team also finished the year ranked No. 36 nationally in the final Golfstat poll, which marks the highest team finish in program history. The team's season scoring average per round was 293.75, which was more than a full two shots better than the previous record of 295.8, which was set last year.

"Obviously, I am very pleased with our season," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "We certainly had something to prove after our season was canceled last year. The ladies worked hard over the summer and showed up ready to play in August. I am very proud of how the team has handled adversity and uncertainty. We did not know what would happen coming into the fall with tournaments. Many were canceled and some new ones were started. We were fortunate to be invited to all of the Big 12 events in the fall. I'm pleased with the way we played in the fall.

"The spring season started off well with a very good showing in Houston," Akers added. "I would say the best event for us during the year was the third-place finish at The Bruzzy. You have to look at the competition to understand how a third-place finish can be better than two wins down the stretch, but it was."

Tan finished tied for second in The Bruzzy, which the Mean Green hosted at Lantana Golf Club, before winning the C-USA Championship and, a month to the day later, winning and also helping the team to another team championship at the Barstool Let Them Play Classic, which was organized in a matter of days after the heartbreaking cancelation of the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge due to "playable, but not championship-level conditions." It was just the second time the program had been to an NCAA Regional, and all three days were deemed washouts due to heavy rain off and on.

"The cancelation at the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge was a travesty," Akers said. "I hope this motivates us for next year to advance to the national championship. It was incredible how Riggs at Barstool put together the Let Them Play event and gave us a sense of closure. The event was awesome and the ladies had so much fun. To come out of that with a win certainly helped the sting of not being able to tee it up at Regionals."

On top of the strong finish to the season, which included the strong finish at The Bruzzy and wins at the C-USA Championship and Let Them Play Classic, several individuals marks were added to the program record book, as well.

Cox set a new single-season record for scoring average, breaking her own program record for the second time, with a 72.26 after notching top-20 finishes in all nine of her events. She also set a new record for single-season birdies (91) and became the new career leader in scoring average (74.18) while setting career records for birdies (349) and rounds of par or better (44). She was also named to the All-Conference USA First Team for the third straight season and held a spot on the team for the fourth time in her career.

Tan, who is hot on Cox's trail for several of her program records, has at least one year left and plans to be back for a fifth year due to the COVID-19 waiver. She posted the second-best single-season scoring average in program history with a 72.85. Her 54-hole score of 207 at both the C-USA Championship and the Let Them Play Classic set a new program record for 54-hole score. She was also a first-team all-conference selection, becoming the first player in program history other than Cox to earn first-team honors. Her career scoring average of 74.25 is now second all-time behind Cox's 74.18.

Junior Katie Finley posted the third-best scoring average of the season (74.58), which was the ninth-best in program history for a single season. She also earned third-team All-Conference USA honors - her first all-conference nod. Sophomore Emilie Ricaud's par-3 scoring average of 3.010 entering the Let Them Play Classic was good enough to break a program record that had stood since the 2002-03 season, but it was bested by Cox's 2.989.
