Partners in life and business, Geraldine Lavin and Hayden Stebbins are a very interesting young couple. Together they own and run Suntrap Botanical in Brooktondale, at the corner of Burns and Central Chapel roads, a four-acre herb farm and apothecary, and a budding tree nursery.
Their apothecary products are formulated and handcrafted by Geraldine, who is a clinical herbalist. Suntrap offers seed-to-bottle tincture formulas, seasonal wellness boxes, consultation services, educational materials, workshops and retreats. Their website, suntrap.co, explains, “We grow as many of our apothecary ingredients as possible and what we cannot grow ourselves, we source from small farms we trust.”

Geraldine, originally from Pennsylvania, and Hayden, from Connecticut, both attended the Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine in Lowgap, North Carolina. When living in Philadelphia, Geraldine helped to turn vacant lots into community gardens, and Hayden spent a year abroad where he honed his passion for foraging, and says, “Food is the basis of everything.”

Chili
There will be an “All You Can Eat” chili dinner (vegetarian available) from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at Caroline Valley Community Church, 546 Valley Road in Brooktondale. The cost is $10 per person, $5 for children under 10, and free for children under 5. This is a complete meal with bread pudding and cherry cobbler for dessert.
Potluck
Jason Haremza, the new Town of Danby planner, will be the guest speaker during the West Danby Community Association’s winter potluck dinner at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at West Danby Fire Hall on Sylvan Lane.
Fundraiser
There will be a special pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, to benefit IPD Investigator Robert DuPay and his family, who recently lost their home in a fire. The food is wonderful, and this is a very worthy cause.
Finns
The Finger Lakes Finns will gather for a meeting and potluck luncheon at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at Newfield Fire Hall, 77 Main St. The Finger Lakes Finns is organized to promote cultural and educational appreciation of Finnish heritage and customs. Anyone of Finnish descent, those married to persons of Finnish descent, and any others interested in the work and activities of the society are welcome.
Legion
American Legion Post 221, on Danby Road, will serve up a fish dinner on Friday, Jan. 17 and a pasta dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 22, both meals from 5 to 7 p.m. These dinners are open to everyone.
Trivia
Nitty Gritty Trivia returns to Brookton’s Market, at 491 Brooktondale Road, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, and will continue every other Friday. Show up with your team of up to six people, and play four rounds of trivia, hosted by Hannah and Angie of Nitty Gritty Trivia!
Top two teams win Market Moolah, and the winning team earns a spot on the 2020 Brag Board and a chance to play in the Trivia Championship at the end of the year. We may not be as smart as "Jeopardy’s" Ken Jennings, but I bet fun will be had by all!

Tai chi
Beginning Taoist Tai Chi classes will begin at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, on the lower level of the Newfield Masonic Temple, 186 Main St., and continue on Mondays and Wednesdays. For more information, please contact Gundy Lee at 607-564-3684.
Writing
Winter is the perfect time for writing, but cabin fever can often set in, so every Wednesday, from Jan. 29 through March 4, the Candor Free Library is opening its doors to scribblers and scribes of all genres for “Cabin Fever Writing Month,” or CaFeWriMo for short. These sessions are free.
Take along your coffee, your laptop, your pencils and notebooks, and enjoy provided chocolate! These sessions are free and will kick off at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29 with local author Carol Henry. If the weather is bad, there is no session. To register, and for more information, please contact Carol at either 607-659-7661 or carolhenry@frontiernet.net.
Seniors
I stand corrected about meetings for the Caroline Seniors. They are on winter break and will not gather again until April.
Help
I received a request from Ron Schoneman, president of the Board of Trustees of the King’s Cemetery, on Stone Quarry Road.
With the recent passing of the board’s Vice President Stephen Poleski, Ron is in need of new members to assist him with the running of the cemetery. Please give him a call at either 607-280-9582 or 272-1037.
Preschool
Space is still available for preschool children to attend the nature-based Playful Nature Explorer’s at Ithaca Children’s Garden.
The winter session is Monday, Wednesday and Thursday until March 26, with one-day, two day, or three-day schedules open.
A flexible payment plan and scholarships are available. For more information, please contact Early Childhood Educator Mara Lott at mara@ithacachildrensgarden.org to arrange a visit. Kids love to play outside even during our chilly weather, and this group is all about that!
From Cornell to Oz
I love to read, with usually three to four books going at the same time. I recently read a wonderful book, “Finding Dorothy” by Elizabeth Letts.
L. Frank Baum, the creator of the book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” was born in Chittenango, New York, which is something I knew. What I didn’t know is his wife, Maude Gage Baum, the daughter of suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage, attended Cornell University, and resided in the women’s dormitory, called Sage College in 1880.
It was a time when men in charge at the college proclaimed that “women would bring down the standing of the fledging Cornell.” This book is fiction but written with such researched information that we feel like we are there meeting a young Judy Garland, pulling back the curtain to learn more about how Mr. Baum came up with the ideas for the scarecrow, tin man, lion, the wizard and even Toto!
We learn that the song “Somewhere over the Rainbow” almost did not make it into the movie. It is a story filled with old Hollywood names and places and wonder. I read it very slowly because I didn’t want it to end!
Southern Tompkins Town Talk appears every other Thursday in the Ithaca Journal. Please contact Gay Huddle at 273-6530 or gayhuddle@hotmail.com with stories from the Danby, West Danby, Newfield, South Hill and Brooktondale neighborhoods.
