The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Thursday that an unnamed drugmaker has reported a shortage of a medication that uses an active pharmaceutical ingredient made at a site in China affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. Many factories in China, particularly in the Hubei Province, have been closed or operating with restricted hours in recent weeks, and there have been instances of workforce shortages given that many regions are restricting travel for workers that went home for Lunar New Year celebrations. The FDA said it has been in contact with 180 drugmakers that utilize ingredients manufactured in China since Jan. 24 over concerns that shortages may arise. At least 20 drugs that are made up of active pharmaceutical ingredients solely sourced from China have been identified by the FDA. "None of these firms have reported any shortage to date," the regulator said. "Also, these drugs are considered non-critical drugs." The FDA also said that there are 63 manufacturers with 72 facilities in China that make "essential" medical devices. The outbreak, which originated in Wuhan, China, has sickened more than 83,000 people worldwide and killed at least 2,800.
