#SkinSchool: 3 skincare ingredients you need to know about - harpersbazaar.com

It seems as if every week a new miracle skin product enters the market, promising to turn back time, give an impressive glow or beat blemishes. With the skincare scene so crowded, attempting to build a routine that will actually give you the results you want can feel overwhelming.

However, just because something is trending doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right for you. Sometimes, simplicity is key. That’s why we’re stripping it back to basics to find the skincare ingredients that are actually worth your time (and money). With the help of the experts at SkinCeuticals, we’ve narrowed it down to three hero ingredients that will truly transform your skin.

1. Vitamin C

A naturally occurring antioxidant, vitamin C is your secret weapon for reducing the appearance of fine lines and uneven skin tone.

Free radicals – unstable atoms in the skin that can lead to early signs of ageing – are produced through environmental factors, such as exposure to UV light or pollution.

When applied topically, L-ascorbic acid, the active compound in vitamin C, helps to neutralise those free radicals, in turn brightening the appearance of skin and reducing discolouration. L-ascorbic acid also boosts the production of collagen, reducing the appearance of fine lines and leaving skin looking more plump.

“A stabilised formulation is essential,” explains cosmetic surgeon and internationally acclaimed beauty lecturer Dr. Jonquille Chantrey. “Look for a low-pH formula with a high concentration of L-ascorbic acid, like C E Ferulic by SkinCeuticals, which contains 15%. Added ferulic acid and vitamin E helps protect against environmental damage, while the formula assists with skin barrier function.”

Vitamin C works best as part of your morning routine, to protect against the impact of environmental factors throughout the day. Combined with your daily SPF, it will provide an ultra-effective line of defence against premature ageing and sun damage.

2. Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a powerful natural humectant, meaning it can absorb and hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, as well as boosting radiance. As consultant dermatologist Dr. Emma Craythorne puts it: “It’s pretty much the best thing for hydration of the skin.”

While HA can be used in injectables to add volume to the dermal layer of skin, it is most commonly found in topical products, such as serums or moisturisers. But not all products are created equal.

“The formulation is critical, as hyaluronic acid is often too large a molecule to penetrate the upper skin layers,” says Dr. Jonquille Chantrey.

To ensure you get an effective hydration boost, Chantrey recommends a product like SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier, which uses hyaluronic acid to draw moisture to the skin’s surface. The formula, which contains ProXylane (a patented ingredient derived from beech trees), boosts hydration and restores water to the skin.

We'd suggest applying HA after your vitamin C infused serum, then finishing it off with a light cream to lock in the moisture.

3. Niacinamide

A skincare powerhouse, niacinamide is a derivative of vitamin B3 and is likely to become a can’t-live-without ingredient in your routine.

“Niacinamide has antioxidant potential, enhances epidermal barrier function, improves the appearance of hyperpigmentation and fine lines, and improves skin elasticity,” explains Dr. Jonquille Chantrey. “Depending on the formulation, it can have a broad number of uses, including stimulating skin cell turnover.”

For reducing the frequency of blemishes, niacinamide works to control sebum production and prevent a build-up of excess oil that can lead to congestion.

To target skin discolouration, use a product like SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense Serum. The high-potency formula, featuring a 5% concentration of niacinamide with 1.8% tranexamic acid, helps to gently slough away dead cells. In turn, this improves the appearance of discolouration, including hyperpigmentation, post-blemish scars and stubborn brown spots.
