Some weight-loss and sexual enhancement supplements sold on Amazon, eBay, and other online stores contain hidden ingredients, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says. And those ingredients include active pharmaceutical drugs that can be dangerous under certain circumstances.
As part of an investigation, the FDA tested 26 products purchased from Amazon, all of which contained undeclared active ingredients. Several of those items were given Amazon's Choice or “#1 Best Seller” badges. The FDA also tested 25 products from eBay, 20 of which had hidden pharmaceutical ingredients. Those ingredients included things like sibutramine, an appetite suppressant that was taken off the market due to the risk for strokes, as well as the laxative phenolphthalein. It's a violation of federal law for products to contain undeclared drug ingredients, the FDA says. (You can see the full list of tainted weight-loss products here and tainted sexual enhancement supplements here.)
“While the FDA has engaged in discussions with online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay regarding these issues in the past, we believe they can do more to protect consumers from these fraudulent and potentially dangerous products," Donald D. Ashley, J.D., director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a press release. “We continue to urge stores, websites, and online marketplaces, like Amazon and eBay, to take appropriate steps to protect the American public by not selling or facilitating the sale of illegal FDA-regulated products.”
The FDA doesn't regulate supplements in the same way that it regulates pharmaceutical drugs, which go through an extensive review and approval process before they hit the market, SELF explained previously. Instead, the companies behind the supplements are responsible for detecting any issues and making sure their products actually contain what they say they do.
So any issues with supplements like these are generally found only after they've been made available to consumers. That means it's up to customers to do their own research and decide whether they trust a particular company or products. To help in that effort, the FDA does maintain a database of tainted product. And it's important to speak to your doctor before taking any new drug or supplement—even if it contains exactly what it's supposed to—because they may interfere with other medications or health conditions.
