ACCORD, N.Y. — Founded in 2013 as a hops farm, Arrowood Farms has evolved into a business that not only supports local agriculture but showcases it through the food and beverages created there, co-founder and managing partner Jacob Meglio said.
Today, the farm grows more than hops and has an orchard where fruit is grown. Meglio said the farm also brews and distills its own beers and spirits using all New York-grown ingredients, with the exception of a few botanicals used in the gin. The farm, at 236 Lower Whitfield Road, also has its own restaurant that opened in the spring of 2020 called The Apiary, as well as an actual apiary for bees that create honey and yeast, Meglio said.
“We’re kind of a full-fledged food and beverage enterprise at this point,” he said. “All kind of stemming off of that initial founding philosophy of … seeing what’s available locally in the Hudson Valley, utilizing local ingredients to craft and create unique products that really showcase the flavor and character of those ingredients, and then sharing it with anyone who wants to be a part of it.”
The Apiary currently features foods like burgers and a chicken sandwich on its menu, along with the beers and spirits crafted at the farm. The farm also hosts a monthly dinner and beverage pairing, featuring a four- to six-course dinner, Meglio said.
Meglio said the dinner showcases the skills coming from the kitchen, as well as the agriculture of neighboring farms and the products made at Arrowood Farms.
There is also a stage where Arrowood Farms hosts concerts. Meglio said the farm partners with music production company Impact Artists, which books acts that can be enjoyed by people drinking farm-grown beer outdoors.
And while the concerts are held seasonally, as weather permits, The Apiary and tasting room are open year-round, Meglio said.
He said the farm showcases locally grown grains, hops and native yeast, among other ingredients.
Meglio said Arrowood Farms is taking the same approach to its farmhouse beers that natural winemakers take and is able to make familiar and accessible styles.
Those include hazy IPAs and pilsners that offer a New York take on a traditional European style, he said.
“So it tells a more interesting story, I would say,” Meglio said.
Arrowood Farms built its first tasting room in 2015 and opened it in the spring of 2016, Meglio said. A second tasting room, called The Outpost, opened at 3 Church St. in New Paltz in 2018.
Meglio said the purpose of the second tasting room was to give more people access to what Arrowood Farms makes. It showcases the beer the farm makes and allows customers to purchase full bottles of beer and spirits, as well as other seasonal products produced at the farm, he said.
“It’s kind of like a bar/farm stand,” he said.
Among its spirits, Arrowood Farms makes vodka, bourbon and gin, Meglio said. He said the brewing system the farm uses can create beer or spirits, which allows efficient use of the facility and the ingredients.
For example, Meglio said the farm recently brewed a corn lager with the same corn used for its bourbon. A customer could come to the farm and taste the corn in the beer, or in the spirits, and, if the menu is right, have corn on the cob at The Apiary.
“It really shows how people can access local agriculture in multiple different ways and in ways that really tell a very different story, even though you’re using the same ingredient,” Meglio said.
