Halloween is just a little over a month away and stores have been selling those big bags of candy for weeks.

Walmart already has Christmas trees in its stores and Hershey has revealed its holiday candies, but we digress.

Back to Halloween candy.

Candy is big business. According to the National Retail Federation, the purchase of Halloween candy this year is expected to be around $10 billion - that’s a lot of candy.

“Americans plan to spend more than ever to make this Halloween a memorable one,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Retailers have implemented a number of measures, such as bringing in Halloween products earlier than normal, to ensure their shelves are stocked with seasonal candy, décor and other items ahead of this important holiday.”

Candystore.com, an online bulk candy retailer, looked at data to determine the best and worst Halloween candies as well as the favorite Halloween candy in each state for 2021.

Last year, Halloween candy sales were down during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has not gone away but from what we have seen trick-or-treating is on this year.

Anyway, Candystore.com took lots of data and analyzed it and came up with the worst and best Halloween candies and each state’s favorite Halloween candy.

Candystore.com said it used best and worst lists published on “reputable websites” then used their own customer survey data to create these lists. Candystore surveyed more than 17,000 of their own customers.

Let’s start with the worst Halloween candy. Here’s the sour news:

  • 10. Black licorice (other than Twizzlers)
  • 9. Good & Plenty (makes sense with black licorice being the worst)
  • 8. Tootsie Rolls
  • 7. Mary Janes
  • 6. Wax Coke Bottles (didn’t even know these were still made)
  • 5. Necco Wafers
  • 4. Smarties
  • 3. Peanut Butter Kisses
  • 2. Circus Peanuts
  • 1. Candy Corn - a repeat loser

Now, on to the good part - the best Halloween candies. Pay attention and buy these to give out to the costumed characters that will visit your house.

  • 9. Butterfinger
  • 8. Hershey Chocolate Bar
  • 7. Twix
  • 6. Kit Kat
  • 5. Sour Patch Kids
  • 4. Snickers
  • 3. Skittles
  • 2. M&Ms
  • 1. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups - Candystore says, “This is the perennial blowout favorite.” Of the other “best” lists that the website used, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were No. 1 on six of them.

Did you hear that Reese’s is creating Reese’s peanut butter pumpkin patches in real pumpkin patches? You can influence where the company puts its next patch.

Candystore.com said it has been delivering bulk candy around the country for 14 years.

The company looked at its 14 years of sales data in the months leading up to Halloween.

“We sell nationwide (and to Canada) so we broke down our sales by state. We also have relationships with major candy manufacturers and distributors – all of whom contributed and helped us reach our conclusions.

Then we charted the best sellers in every state for Halloween.”

Guess what candy is America’s favorite Halloween candy? Yep, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Here in Pennsylvania, the peanut butter cup wasn’t in the top three. Say what??? How did that happen?

No. 1 in Pennsylvania is - Hershey’s Miniatures. In second is M&Ms and in third is Skittles.
