EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Crews say a run for a fire at an Evansville factory is now being evacuated due to a gas leak.
Officials say that factory was Kerry Ingredients, and that call for a commercial fire came in around 1 a.m.
Division Chief with EFD, Mike Larson, said “Prior to our arrival dispatch was also notified by neighboring apartment complex that people there noticed flames coming from one of the exhaust stacks on top of the building.”
That’s when the building was first evacuated and numerous crews were called to the scene.
District Chief with EFD, Jay Paul said they had to call in multiple crews because of the location of the fire on the second and third floor of the building.
“We had more crews check on extension through the building, we had a little extension through the roof,” said District Chief Paul
After more investigation District Chief Paul said “we found that it was a piece of equipment inside that had caught on fire and the extinguishment system had got off and was ejecting smoke from the building.”
The fire was considered out after an hour and a half but crews went through a lengthy check to make sure all embers were out
Division Chief Larson said this is normal for commercial fires.
“When you get into commercial buildings there’s equipment all over the place,” said Larson, “You may have to take a left to go down 2 or 300 feet, to take a right, to go back 2 or 300 feet, then to go up a set of stairs, to go left or right and zig zag around inside the structure to get to what’s actually burning.”
It was confirmed there were no injuries and all crews, besides the fire investigators left the scene.
Employees then appeared to return to work.
Just 2 hours later, those investigators and employees smelled gas.
That’s when Division Chief Larson said they did decided to evacuate all employees for a potential gas leak, and we sent another set of crews to investigate.
At first, the Evansville fire Department found zero levels of a natural gas leak.
Then CenterPoint investigators arrived and were able to find a small gas leak, remote from the fire.
The building’s gas lines were shut off and work stopped for the time being.
It has not been confirmed how the fire started and more importantly whether that fire caused the gas leak.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation.
We will update this story as it develops.
