A top beer producer in China said on Friday it's investigating a video that appears to show a person urinating into an ingredient container.

The video, which went viral on Chinese social media on Thursday, shows a man wearing a worker's hardhat and uniform climbing into a brewery container at a warehouse. He appears to urinate inside.

It's not clear if the man was a company employee.

Tsingtao Brewery, the second-largest beer maker in China, said in a statement that it's investigating the video, which it said was related to its "Brewery No. 3." The plant is in Pingdu, a city in Shandong province.

Local authorities are also conducting their own investigation, Tsingtao said.

"At present, this batch of malt has been completely sealed," Tsingtao added. "Our company continues to increase management efforts to ensure product quality, and welcomes consumer supervision."

Tsingtao is one of China's largest and most-exported beer brands, and is typically known for its lager. It owns an estimated 15% share of the domestic market.

Video was filmed outside brewery grounds, local media reports

On Sunday, state-owned outlet National Business Daily reported that the man who appears to urinate in the video and the person who filmed the incident were both detained by police in Pingdu city.

The Pingdu Market Authority said on Friday it was investigating the urinating video. "Once verified, we will handle this seriously in accordance with the law and regulations," it said.

An unnamed source familiar with the authorities' investigation told National Business Daily that the pair were externally hired workers, and that the video had been shot outside of brewery grounds.

Tsingtao's share price on the Shanghai exchange fell around 6.75% to 75.60 yuan early on Monday, but rallied back to 80.14 yuan that afternoon for a net drop of around 1.15%.

Tsingtao Brewery did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
