We could all use a doughnut, America’s ultimate comfort food, right about now.
Just imagine a cake doughnut in your hand. It’s fried to perfection and covered with chocolate. Topped with sprinkles. It melts in your mouth and takes you on a heavenly journey.
Sure, you might have other favorites. But it doesn’t matter. Just about any doughnut will do: Glazed, jelly-filled, custard long johns, powdered, Boston Creme, maple bacon, Crullers, apple fritters, and the list goes on and on.
They bring out the Homer Simpson in all of us.
Mmmmmmm. Doughnuts.
In honor of National Doughnut Day, which is today, June 5, we thought we would look back at my favorite search of all time -- Michigan’s Best Doughnut.
During my two-week sugar rush back in 2014 I sampled more than 200 doughnuts. It was a glorious two weeks.
Here’s a look at my Top 10 and Best of the Rest
1. Hinkley Bakery, 700 S. Blackstone, Jackson
517-782-1122
You can rest assured that co-owner Brian Hinkley has been been busy making doughnuts all night because when doors opened at 5:15 a.m. today people were already lining up out the door. With a long history dating back to 1913, this Jackson treasure is known for its melt-in-your-mouth doughnut holes, crescents, apple fritters and more. Cash only. They ask guests to please wear their masks.

2. Sweetwater’s Donut Mill, 3333 Stadium Dr., Kalamazoo
In a class of its own, Sweetwater’s has been recognized nationally for its quality and great variety of doughnuts at multiple locations. Creativity, social media engagement and community involvement are the reasons they have been so successful. Plus, they make an Oberon doughnut every year to kick a new season. Who doesn’t love that. Try any of the cake doughnuts inspired by popular candy bars (Mounds, Reese’s, Snickers) and the Cinnamon Rolls the size of my head.

3. Crust, 104 W. Caroline St., Fenton
810-629-8882
Since opening in 2012, owners Chad and Mary Beth Brennan, Mark Hamel and Mike Green have made Crust an overall brand, bringing together bakery, restaurant and even pub into one place. Their restaurant uses their baked goods in entrees for breakfast, lunch and dinner. “Crust is still a bakery first and foremost, using traditional, authentic small batch recipes,” Chad said. They were our winner as Michigan’s Best Bakery! As for the doughnuts, try one of the best in the state, the homemade Peanut Butter and Jelly doughnut that is balanced with every bite. The best! Oh, and for National Doughnut Day they created a new flavor - a Chocolate Covered Michigan Cherry brioche donut filled with cherry compote and covered with a dark chocolate glaze.

4. Ryke's Bakery, 1788 Terrace St, Muskegon
The first time I met original owners Butch and Renee Rouwhorst I felt like I had come home. The couple created a great community of friends and family; Butch with his recipes and Renee with her energy and creativity. Not much has changed since they sold it a few years ago. I love the new Grand Haven store where you get all those familiar doughnuts. My wife still requires I bring home a Tiger Tale whenever I’m near a Ryke’s location. I love the Holland Cream Long Johns. In many ways the vision has grown with new ownership, adding a new location in Holland.

5. Dutch Girl Donuts, 19000 Woodward Ave, Detroit
313-368-3020
One of our favorite stops because of its history, opening in 1947, and the fact their freshly made doughnuts bring in a diverse group of customers. Currently not open because of the pandemic, the locals say, “don’t worry, they’ll be back.” We recommend the raisin glazed doughnuts, which are made fresh every day. Cash only.

6. Louie’s Bakery, 144 W Michigan Ave, Marshall
269-781-3542
Louie’s Bakery, which has been family owned and operated since 1952, was on the search for Michigan’s Best Doughnut, and then again for Michigan’s Best Bakery. “Jason LaForge, Louie’s grandson, is running the show now, and what a show it is,” said Amy Sherman of MLive in our article about how to have a Michigan’s Best Day in Marhsall. “This bakery offers oodles of choices, from delicious fried doughnuts, to hand rolled hamburger and hot dog buns, to breads, cookies, cakes and pastries. The number-one seller, and not to be missed, is their famous nut roll. Deceptively simple, it’s the little details behind this treat that not only make it great, but show off the true baking talents of the team at Louie’s. ...They are decadent and delicious, and a must-try when in Marshall.”

7. Marge’s Donut Den, 1751 28th St. SW, Wyoming
616-532-7413
I’ve been a Marge’s fan since the day I moved to Grand Rapids almost 30 years ago. Once you step in the door to be greeted by the smiling faces, and then taste some of the best doughnuts you’ll ever have, you become a fan for life.

8. Van Brocklin’s Bakery, 1129 N. State St., Big Rapids
231-796-5440
I have already proclaimed they have Michigan’s Best Bear Claw!

9. Bea’s Bakery Owosso (formerly Lance’s Bakery), 309 N Washington St., Owosso
989-720-2254
It was so much fun returning to Lance’s Bakery in early 2018 to film a Michigan’s Best Day video in Owosso. We had a great time catching up with owner Lance Ellenberg, who was in good spirits despite his health beginning to deteriorate. It wasn’t long afterward that Owosso native Robin Nevins took over the business. She renamed it Bea’s Bakery, but kept Lance’s signature maple triangles. Lance passed away May 18 after a courageous and heroic battle with Early-onset Alzheimer’s.
There is still time until 12pm today to pre-order you $1 donuts for tomorrow morning pickup. If picking them out in person is more your style, our cases will be filled with delicious treats. See you then!

10. Butter Crust Bakery, 6181 Dixie, Bridgeport Township (Saginaw)
989-777-3680
One of the finalists in 2014 for Michigan’s best doughnut, Butter Crust made our Top 10 for Michigan’s Best Bakery. You know everything is great. We love the fresh glazed doughnuts and Peanut Butter and Jelly long johns. But you must try an “Ugly” or “Yum Tum.” The Ugly consists of apple, strawberry and cinnamon mixed with the ends of the dough, rolled out and fried. The Yum Yum, their top seller, is layered dough folded into angel wings, fried and glazed.

Morat’s Bakery, 820 Terrace, Muskegon, MI 49440
231-722-0202
Located in New Era when we first visited, Morat’s Bakery & Pub was a new concept from a family with a rich baking history. After several years in the area, the owners decided to move to Muskegon, where they really hit their stride. The doughnuts are adventurous, as are the pastries, breads and muffins.
