Two Pro Football Focus analysts believe Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is the best college football quarterback of the last decade.

PFF’s Anthony Treash and Austin Gayle said they believe the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner was a better college football quarterback than Auburn’s Cam Newton, LSU’s Joe Burrow, Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, Oregon’s Marcus Mariota, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, Florida State’s Jameis Winston, Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel.

“Anyone but Baker Mayfield is a wrong answer because we he did at Oklahoma is unlike anything we’ve ever seen over that sample size,” Treash said. “I mean those last three years he was at Oklahoma are in the top nine as far as PFF College Wins Above Average go.

“I mean it’s indisputable. He is the best college quarterback we’ve seen over the last decade and will forever be known as one of the best college quarterbacks in the history of college football.”

Gayle echoed many of Treash’s sentiments.

“I mean if you’re looking at best single season in the PFF college era, I’m looking at 2014 and not beyond that, Kyler Murray [and] Joe Burrow, both of those guys are up there, but I’m riding with Treash here,” Gayle said. “I think Baker Mayfield has been the best quarterback of the decade.

“Specifically from a PFF grading perspective, he has I think three of the top 10 all-time single-season college grades, like that’s how good he was at Oklahoma and you saw it across a large sample size. You don’t normally see that at the collegiate level. It’s rare that you see three years of starting experience and three years of excellent play at the quarterback position. You saw that from a clean pocket, which is one of the more stable metrics in college and the NFL from Baker Mayfield. I’m going with Baker Mayfield.”

Mayfield threw 1,026-of-1,497 (68.5%), 14,607 passing yards, 131 touchdowns and 30 interceptions when combining his 2013 season at Texas Tech and 2015-2017 at Oklahoma.

The two-time Big 12 Player of the Year and first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft posted a career record of 39-6 as a starter in college.

Mayfield also had a 96.5 PFF passing grade at Oklahoma, which is the highest grade of the PFF college era.

Here are Mayfield’s overall grades by season:

  • 2015: 92.3 (Tied for eighth)
  • 2016: 93.4 (Fourth)
  • 2017: 95.2 (First)

PFF’s Eric Eager disagreed Treash and Gayle, saying Deshaun Watson was the best college quarterback of the last decade.

“He had two game-winning drives in the national championship game against Alabama, Deshaun Watson is one of the most impressive college football quarterbacks this last decade,” Eager said. “He won one against Alabama. He should have won another one.

“Then he’s gone on to have as impressive of a NFL career as anybody except for Patrick Mahomes of guys who are drafted in the last few years. I think Deshaun Watson deserves a lot more consideration for this than he’s been given.”

It’s worth noting how much Oklahoma’s defense struggled during the last several years, especially in big games.

The Sooners are 0-4 in the College Football Playoff having allowed:

  • 37 points to Clemson in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31, 2015,
  • 54 points to Georgia in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2018,
  • 45 points to Alabama in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 29, 2018
  • and 63 points to LSU in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 28, 2019

Midway through the 2018 campaign — during Kyler Murray’s Heisman Trophy-winning season — the Sooners fired defensive coordinator Mike Stoops after giving up 48 points in a regular-season loss to Texas.

Stoops served as Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator from 1999-2003 and then again from 2012-2018.

Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley initially retained Stoops when his brother Bob retired as head coach of the Sooners in June 2017.

It’s amazing how the Sooners stayed nationally relevant considering how much their defense struggled; the contrast between their high-scoring offense and Swiss-cheese defense has been a bit like Jekyll and Hyde.

Here is how Oklahoma ranked in points allowed during Mayfield’s tenure:

  • 2015: 22 points per game allowed (29th in the country)
  • 2016: 28.8 points per game allowed (69th in the country)
  • 2017: 27.1 points per game allowed (68th in the country)

Current Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch is entering his second season with the team after taking over interim coordinator Ruffin McNeill.
