The Jacksonville Jaguars knew they needed to revamp their roster this offseason after finishing 1-15 in 2020, so they signed several players in free agency. While some position groups didn’t get as much attention as they needed, their wide receiver corps benefited from an infusion of talent and Marvin Jones Jr., their most impactful signing on offense, was named the Jags’ best offseason acquisition in 2021.
Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report recently wrote about the best offseason additions every NFL team made in 2021 and believes Jones gets the nod for the Jaguars. He notes that Jacksonville is building a team for quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the projected first overall selection in 2021’s draft, and believes the Clemson standout will benefit from the veteran wide receiver’s presence.
Davenport notes that Jones has had just one 1,000-yard season but points out that he’s caught nine touchdowns in three of the last four years. He goes on to say the 2012 fifth-round selection could fulfill the role of a mentor for the Jaguars’ young wide receivers.
The Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver corps will be a strength in 2021.
Looking at the Jaguars’ offseason acquisition, it’s hard to argue with Davenport’s pick. Although the addition of cornerback Shaquill Griffin and safety Rayshawn Jenkins will solidify the secondary, Jones will have a bigger individual impact in 2021
While it’s true that Jones has just posted one 1,000-yard season, he’s gotten close several times, hauling in more than 930 receiving yards twice in his eight-year career and reaching at least 700 yards six times. Moreover, he played second fiddle A.J. Green in Cincy and Kenny Golladay in Detroit but has shined when he was given the opportunity.
Also, Jones will be an important plan of the Jaguars’ game plan but the team won’t have to solely depend on him, as they also have Laviska Shenault Jr. and DJ Chark Jr. Last season, the duo played well but their performance was affected but the inconsistency at quarterback. With Lawrence leading the team and the presence of Jones, they both should have better production in 2021. Heading into 2021’s draft, wide receiver won’t be a need for this Jacksonville team.
