MICROWAVED AT TWO MINUTES, 20 SECONDS — A Wisconsin consumer of Bagel Bites Pizza Snacks has filed a lawsuit in America’s Dairyland, claiming the popular circular cheese-and-sauce treats made by Kraft Heinz have “deceptive” ingredients.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the lawsuit alleges Bagel Bites do not have real mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce as its packaging indicates.
“Wisconsin consumers want real mozzarella cheese in pizza because they value (1) its soft, moist texture, (2) its milky, yet tangy taste and (3) its high protein and relatively low calories and sodium compared to other cheeses,” says the suit.
The plaintiff Kaitlyn Huber, who hails from Elroy, Wisc., reportedly took litigious action in late April. Additionally, the lawsuit seeks class-action status on behalf of others who bought Bagel Bites in Wisconsin.
Kraft Heinz contested the claims, reported Food & Wine Magazine.
“Bagel Bites, the perfect bite-sized pizza snack, are made with delicious, high-quality ingredients that our fans know and love,” a Kraft Heinz spokesperson said. “We proudly stand by the food we make, and are focused on bringing great products to market. The lawsuit lacks any merit, and we will strongly defend our brand.”
The lawsuit was initially filed in New York but moved to Wisconsin “because of the importance of the dairy industry here,” reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, noting about a third of all the cheese made in Wisconsin — over a billion pounds in 2017 — is mozzarella.
