Cooler fall weather means there are plenty of activities on the calendar around Baltimore this weekend, from festivals featuring tacos and beer to benefits for cancer research and treatment. In the arts, explore the art song, celebrate composer John Williams, see the work of Black choreographers and the view the films of Baltimore youth. Stay safe, everyone. Here’s the rundown:
Baltimore Lieder Weekend: Oct. 15-17 at An Die Musik Live! Described as “A Kaleidoscope of Black American Songs and Arias,” the weekend of programming celebrates the art song, a form of classical music. Musical performances will be held on Oct. 15 and 17 featuring soprano Joelle Lamarre, with Daniel Schlosberg on piano. On Saturday, Oct. 16, the annual 5k Art Song Walk leaves from Ceremony Coffee Roasters in Mount Vernon at 10:30 a.m.
Baltimore Taco Festival: Oct. 16-17 at Power Plant LIVE! Indulge in tacos over two days at the Inner Harbor venue, with more than 25 vendors, nacho bar, a margarita bar and hot pepper eating contest. The fest will close down a full city block for activities like lucha libre wrestling.
Celebrating John Williams: Oct. 15-17 at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs the music of celebrated film composer John Williams. Conductor Jack Everly leads the pops program over three performances.
Black Choreographers Festival: Oct. 15-16 at Creative Alliance. Alongside workshops during the day, the event features evening showcase performances by movement artists from around the region. Virtual and in-person tickets available.
Mount Royal Soaps October Night Market: 6-10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 at Mount Royal Soaps (2740 Huntingdon Avenue). The sidewalk market in Remington features goods from 10 local makers, food from Snake Hill and the Urban Oyster, plus free beer.
Unfolding Seven Pop Up Exhibition: 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 at Waller Gallery. The exhibition features visual art based on the EP “Seven” by Rae The Conjurers. Additional performers include Savannah Imani Wade, Sabrina Lee, Ky Vassor, Boutzie and Katiana Jasmine Weems.
Das Best Oktoberfest: 12-6 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 16, at M&T Bank Stadium. The German-themed festival serves up craft beer, wine and ciders in a beer hall atmosphere, complete with brats to eat music that brings the extra oompah.
Celebrating the Legacy of Charles P. Tilghman and the Sphinx Club: 1-3 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 16 at Cab Calloway Legends Park. The Sphinx Club on Pennsylvania Ave. provided a stage for jazz greats like Duke Ellington and Etta James, as well as a platform for civil rights leaders including A. Philip Randolph or Furman Templeton. This event offers a chance to learn more about the history of the club, and its leader.
An Afternoon of Artistic Excellence: 2-4 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 16 at Enoch Pratt Free Library Central Library. The program features Baker Artist Award winners, including Carl Grubbs, Ellen Cherry, Joyce J. Scott and more performing artists.
BreastFest Baltimore 2021: 2-6 p.m. on Sat., Oct 16 at Nick’s Fish House. The benefit for The Tyanna Foundation, which raises funds for breast cancer research, will feature music, raffles and merch, alongside food and drink offerings from Nick’s. For those who are social distancing, “BreastFest in a Bag” is available for purchase online, and pickup at the event.
Light the Night Baltimore: 5-8 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 16, at Harbor Point. Organized by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the event raises funds for cancer treatment. Gather at a stage for live music and a program, before traversing the Southeast Baltimore area for a walk to commemorate those who affected by cancer.
3rd Annual Baltimore Gravel Rat: 6 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 16 at 100 E 23rd St. It’s a Halloween take on the alley cat bicycle race event, in which teams of riders set off around the city to find checkpoints and complete challenges on a course that’s provided at the event. Costumes encouraged.
Baltimore Chronicles: 7-10 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 16 at YNot Lot. At an outdoor event in Station North, The SNF Parkway screens short films that were created by Baltimore youth to chronicle daily lives in the pandemic years. It was created through a partnership with Park School alumni and Baltimore educators and creators.
Hammers and Ales: 6-10 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 16, virtual. The Baltimore Community ToolBank benefit provides attendees with a package that includes drinks from local breweries and music, as well as a virtual silent auction.
Baltimore Ravens vs. Los Angeles Chargers: 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17 at M&T Bank Stadium. The local NFL team hosts visitors from the West Coast as they look to keep the wins rolling following a big comeback on Monday Night Football.
Coming Home: 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17 at Second Presbyterian Church. Baltimore Musicales presents a quintet performing works by Schumann, Vaughan Williams, Barber, Sibelius and more.
