KAPOLEI, Hawai'i – A strong finish in the final round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational also signaled an exciting end to the Fall season for the CSU Bakersfield golf team. On Wednesday, the Roadrunners carded their best round and best tournament of the season while sophomore Aufa Rachmadya tied the third-best individual round in CSUB's history.
"This team fought this whole week," said Tiffanie Yabut, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "Each player had a breakthrough round this week and I'm extremely proud of the fight and grit each player showed from start to finish today. We've worked hard and have been patient all season, so this is a great round to end on. We are excited to work hard this offseason and prepare for a great Spring!"
Rachmadya, a native of Jakarta, Indonesia, sank a testy birdie putt on Hole 18 to post an even 72 in Round 3 of Hawai'i's tournament. The score also etches her name into the CSUB record books as only one other `Runner all-time (Tori Peers) has posted a lower score relative to par.
As a team, Bakersfield closed the Rainbow Wahine Invite using 310 (+22) strokes, four strokes better than the squad's previous best round on the year.
With another score of 76 on Wednesday, senior Kaleigh Irey (80-76-76) wound up tied for the `Runner lead with Rachmadya on the tournament with 232 strokes. Irey's 54-hole total improved her career-best mark by a whopping 10 strokes. Rachmadya (80-80-72-232) finished the Fall season as Bakersfield's scoring leader at all four tournaments in which the team competed.
Christy Mae Saban, competing in her second collegiate season, tallied 240 strokes (79-78-83), lowering her previous best tournament score by four. Jefi Dordevic improved each round and wrapped up the tournament fourth for the `Runners with 248 strokes (86-83-79). Gillian Galicia carded 83s in all three rounds and ended the week with 249 strokes.
The `Runners wrapped up the tournament in ninth place of nine teams with 949 total strokes (322-317-310, +85). Relative to par, CSUB's result at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational is the squad's lowest three-round total of the season by 22 strokes as Head Coach Tiffanie Yabut and her team enjoyed an excellent end to the Fall season.
When the `Runners return to the Mainland, a little over 100 days will stand between them and their next competitive action. CSUB will take the Winter period to hone skills and prepare for the Spring season. Unhindered by frigid winters, Bakersfield's squad will have plenty of time to ready itself for the rest of the year with the Big West Championship on the horizon.
