LAFAYETTE — Prosecutors charged two men Friday whom police say they caught looting inside Best Buy early Monday, after police dispersed protesters at a Sunday evening demonstration in downtown Lafayette.
Police patrolling the mall about 12:50 a.m. Monday noticed a large group of people breaking into Best Buy. Police said most of the looters ran away before they could get to the scene.
Inside the store, police found Ethan Russell Hughes, 20, 2900 block of Yeager Road, West Lafayette, and Quentin C. Clark, 37, of the 100 block of East 122nd Street in Chicago, according to the prosecutor's probable cause affidavit.
The two were arrested and jail. They posted bond earlier in the week and were released from jail.
They might find themselves re-arrested.
Prosecutors requested Clark's bail be raised to a $100,000 surety bond and a $10,000 cash bond. Prosecutors requested Hughes' bail be increased to a $25,000 surety bond and $2,500 cash.
A judge or a magistrate must approve those bond requests.
Both men were charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, burglary, attempted theft, criminal trespassing, criminal mischief and rioting.
Additionally, Clark was charged with being an habitual offender. He has a weapon conviction from 2004 and three drug-related convictions in Cook and Logan counties in Illinois, according to the probable cause affidavit.
