The liveliest battle of training camp is a love-fest off the field.
On Saturday, two days after pass rusher Nick Bosa gushed about Trent Williams, the Pro Bowl left tackle sent verbal bouquets Bosa’s way.
Williams, 32, who didn’t play in the NFL last year, said before training camp he was among the legions who were impressed by Bosa’s rookie season in 2019.
But he’s altered his opinion after routinely facing the Defensive Rookie of the Year in pass-rush drills and 11-on-11 work.
“He’s better than I already thought he was,” Williams said, “and I knew he was top three, four in the game. But just going up against him every day and seeing how smart he is. Seeing how hard he works. And seeing just how seriously he takes the game. I honestly see his trajectory as being one of the best in the game.
“When it’s all said and done, when you say who’s the best pass rusher … I think Nick Bosa may be the first name that comes out of a lot of people’s mouths.”
Bosa has been among those who have raved about Williams during the first six practices of training camp. But Williams indicated he’s still feeling the effects of not playing since 2018.
“There’s definitely rust,” Williams said. “I’m getting there. I’m getting back to myself — obviously football is not foreign to me. … It’s easy to kind of one rep here, two reps here, to look good. I’m looking for the consistent good reps.”
The Bosa vs. Williams showdown didn’t materialize Saturday because Bosa didn’t practice after he sat out the latter stages of Friday’s session. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Bosa had a “maintenance day.”
Jones update: The 49ers received mostly good news on nose tackle D.J. Jones, who underwent two days of testing after he injured his shoulder in practice Thursday.
Shanahan said Jones does not have a significant shoulder injury, but he was diagnosed with a concussion when he was being examined. Shanahan said Jones could have practiced Friday, had he not been placed in the concussion protocol.
“He ended up having a concussion that we found out when we brought him in,” Shanahan said. “We’re not exactly sure when it happened. But it’s good that we found that out after looking at his shoulder.”
In other injury news, tight end Ross Dwelley (foot) did not practice, leaving the 49ers with just George Kittle and two rookies, Charlie Woerner and Chase Harrell, at the position. Tight end Jordan Reed has yet to make his training camp debut.
