Most pre-orders go live tonight for the new Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra smartphones. I can’t recall the last time I purchase a phone from an actual carrier, because I find their various “deals” to be headache-inducing: credits for this, required trade-ins for that, money-savings spread out over multiple months, extra lines required, blah blah blah.
However, if you’re looking to pick up one of Samsung’s new flagship phones—even though I don’t think you should pre-order either of them—then you might want to hit up your cellular carrier first after all. Some of the deals are just too good to pass up.
AT&T
If you buy a new Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra and agree to purchase it using AT&T’s 30-month installment plan with an AT&T unlimited plan, then AT&T will give you $1,000 back in billing credits over 24 months. That’s the full price of a basic Galaxy Note 20 phone or a good discount on a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. However, there’s one more ingredient you’ll need to add to the cauldron to make this magic happen: a trade-in phone in “good condition” worth at least $60.
That’s quite a few hoops to jump through—including a 30-month commitment—but a free phone is a free phone, right?
Verizon
Buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra and get another Galaxy Note 20 for free with a premium unlimited plan (or half-off with any other unlimited plan). I’m not sure how this deal might apply to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, if at all, but you’d only get a hefty discount if it does—not a free phone, likely.
T-Mobile
Buy one Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra, and you can get another Note 20 for free: the same “$1,000 in billing credits over 24 months” deal as AT&T. You can also apply that credit to a Note 20 Ultra if you want; the phone won’t be free, but it’ll be a nice discount.
You’ll have to add a line to your account in order to activate the deal, making it slightly less practical. That said, T-Mobile’s pre-orders go live on August 7, one day later than everyone else, so if you don’t score a phone on launch day, the “Uncarrier” might be worth considering.
Don’t forget Samsung’s incentives, too
Pre-order your Galaxy Note 20 from anyone, and you’ll be eligible for $100 in credit to use on Samsung’s website or Shop Samsung app. Pre-order a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and you’ll get $150 in credit. No matter what you buy, you’ll need to use the Shop Samsung app to provide proof of purchase. Still, don’t miss out on free (virtual) money!
