ENFIELD, Conn. — The Best Buy appliance and electronics store at 95 Elm St. is closed forever.
The large sign on the exterior of the building is gone and the location is now missing from the chain’s website.
“We had decided not to renew the lease of our Enfield, CT store in Enfield Square,” wrote spokeswoman Claire Larson in an email. “Customers can continue to shop Best Buy at our other neighboring stores, including our Holyoke store which is 15 miles away. This closure was consistent with our regular and ongoing review process of our stores, and as always in these situations we work to help employees find positions at our other nearby stores.”
The last day was Feb. 27.
Best Buy has 12 other Connecticut stores including West Simsbury, West Hartford and Manchester.
The shutdown fits with the chain’s reported pattern of quietly closing locations and an announcement a few weeks ago that it was cutting 5,000 jobs.
Best Buy management itself has said that in the most recent quarter it used 340 stores or roughly 35% of its locations to handle about 70% of its ship-from-store orders.
Best Buy said online sales have taken over from traditional brick-and-mortar and it is already cut back the selling floors at its remaining stores.
In its most recent quarter, online sales grew almost 90% to a record $6.7 billion, and made up 43% of the company’s total domestic sales.
