The first day of the month is always the best day of the month for a moviegoing audience that relies on streaming services. And this week will be particularly great if you’re a Netflix subscriber, as the world’s most viral streamer will be adding 28 new movies to its library.
But which films are the best? How do you decide what to watch? Hopefully, this article can help. Here are some of my recommendations. Then at the end of the article, you can find a full list of every new movie coming to Netflix this week.
At Eternity’s Gate (March 31)
We are blessed to have a thespian such as Willem Dafoe. The man has incredible versatility, starring in everything from the biggest blockbusters (Aquaman) to the most intriguing of arthouse picks (The Lighthouse). In At Eternity’s Gate, Dafoe stars as Vincent Van Gogh in his final years as a painter.
Legally Blonde (April 1)
Anybody who would call Legally Blonde “nothing more than a chick flick” has clearly never seen Legally Blonde. In one of her more outstanding roles, Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon churns out a hilarious performance as Elle Woods—a privileged sorority queen who goes to Harvard to become a lawyer and prove her worth.
Insidious (April 1)
In a unique study last fall where researchers measured people’s heart rates to find the “scariest movie ever,” the horror film Sinister came out on top. But the film that came in second place? That was James Wan’s 2010 Insidious. This instantly classic horror flick follows a family whose son becomes possessed by a dark force after moving to a new home.
Concrete Cowboy (April 2)
The “American western” is a bit of a lost genre these days. Every so often, however, we get a new entry into this storied section of film—and Netflix will introduce its own modern take with Concrete Cowboy. Idris Elba stars in this drama that follows a teenager who finds kinship in a tight-knit community of Black cowboys.
Madame Claude (April 2)
Many—if not most—Americans have probably never heard of Madame Claude. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, this controversial woman ran a flourishing business dedicated to prostitution that gave much power to both the political and criminal world in Paris. Madame Claude details her story.
