COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team set a program-record 198.100 to defeat the University of Maryland, 198.100-195.050, on Friday night (March 12) at the Xfinity Center. U-M's has now posted back-to-back scores of 198.00 or higher.
U-M broke its previous program record of 198.025, which it set last week at the Ohio State Quad, and also set a new record with a program-best 49.600 on balance beam. The Wolverines earned a 49.800 on the vault, which ranks second all-time in program history and is their best score since 2008, when U-M scored a 49.600 at the State of Michigan Classic.
Michigan had nine career-best or career-best-tying performances, highlighted by sophomore Gabby Wilson, who earned her first career all-around title with a career-high 39.625. She also took home her fifth floor exercise title and first career beam title with a career-high 9.975.
Junior Abby Heiskell, sophomore Sierra Brooks and freshman Naomi Morrison shared the vault title with matching 9.975s, which were career-bests for both Heiskell and Morrison and tied a career-high for Brooks. Natalie Wojcik notched her fourth uneven bars title of the season with a 9.950.
Wojcik led the Wolverines on bars, winning the event for the second straight week with a 9.950 before the Michigan vault squad put up a season-best 49.800 behind four stuck landings and three 9.975s from Brooks, Heiskell and Morrison, who all tied for first in the event. The vault titles are back-to-back wins for Brooks and Morrison.
Moving to floor, Wilson earned her first of two titles of the day with a 9.925, and Brooks tied for second with a 9.900. In the fourth and final event, the beam squad turned out a program-best 49.600 behind a career-high 9.975 from Wilson, while Bauman tied a career-best 9.925 to place second overall in the event. The five Wolverine scorers took the top-five spots as Brooks, Wojcik and Heiskell all scored matching 9.900s to close out the meet.
Michigan next will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete for its 26th Big Ten Championships title next Saturday (March 20). The start time is to be announced.
