With Sunday night’s big win for “The Crown” at the Emmy Awards, Netflix has finally ascended to the TV awards throne.
The critically beloved series chronicling the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and the British royal family through the last half of the 20th century delivered the streamer's first outstanding drama series win Sunday.
“We’re going to have a party now,” creator Peter Morgan said as he accepted the Emmy from London’s Soho House. "I’m lost for words, and I’m very, very grateful.”
The win also marked a huge night for the show itself, which picked up seven awards, including those for best drama series; best actress, for Olivia Colman; best actor, for Josh O’Connor; best supporting actress, for Gillian Anderson; and best supporting actor, for Tobias Menzies.
It was a good night all around for Netflix, which won 10 Emmys — including an outstanding limited series award for “The Queen’s Gambit” — to go with the 34 Creative Arts Emmys it took home the weekend before.
Another Netflix show, the period romance "Bridgerton," was also among the eight nominees for best drama.
The nominations for “The Crown” and “Bridgerton” were the 16th and 17th for outstanding drama series for Netflix since 2013. In all, from 2013 to 2020, it had picked up 30 nominations in best drama, comedy and limited series.
“House of Cards” was nominated in five of six years of its run — but even before Kevin Spacey’s past caught up with the show, the political drama ran up against both the dominance of “Game of Thrones” and the newness of streaming services as players in television.
Until Sunday, Netflix had not won in one of the top series categories, outstanding drama series or outstanding comedy series.
Hulu became the first streaming service to win for outstanding drama series in 2017, with “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Amazon Prime Video had also won best comedy honors for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleabag.”
“With the almost infinite explosion of programming in the streaming era, these awards are important to show what rises to the top in a crowded market,” Robert Thompson, director of Syracuse University’s Briar Television and Popular Culture Center, said in an interview ahead of Emmys weekend.
