Facing a PacWest Conference rival in a tightly-contested contest, the second-ranked Eagles survived a head-shaking 10-inning affair that could have gone either way before locking down on defense and posting a shutout in the second part of a doubleheader.
Just as CUI did on Thursday with two dramatic wins over their rivals from Biola, the Green and Gold found a winning recipe against Azusa Pacific by using some familiar ingredients.
Concordia extended its longest winning streak to start a season in program history by moving to 24-0 overall. The Eagles have been ranked No. 2 in the NFCA DII Top 25 Coaches Poll for the past two weeks and are also 12-0 in PacWest play after posting four victories this week.
Game 1: CUI 4, APU 2 (10 innings)
Shelli Faulk came up clutch again at the plate with a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the sixth. Faulk was coming off a big-time performance against Biola where she smacked the game-winning RBI single less than 48 hours earlier.
Erika Morris limited the Cougars to only one run in 5.1 innings of work. After APU rallied to tie it at 1-1, the Eagles turned to Katlin Entrup to limit the Cougars and she clearly looked comfortable on the mound as well.
Entrup struck out six batters and only allowed one run in 4.2 innings to give the CUI lineup multiple chances to retake the lead.
In the tenth, the Eagles did just that. Sydney Sprinkle sent a RBI double to the gap in right-center and Kaia Nisby scored to make it 2-1 CUI. Moments later, first baseman Missy Nemeth smashed a two-run shot over the fence to give the Eagles a 4-1 cushion.
Entrup closed it out and improved to 9-0 on the year after posting one last strikeout and getting APU leadoff hitter Amanda Woods to fly out to right field. Katie Korstrom went the distance for APU and struck out nine in ten innings, but the Eagles still found a way.
"It was a fun and stressful game for sure, but we stuck together and got the win," said Sprinkle. "I thought our pitchers did a great job of keeping us in the game and giving us the chance to start something on offense. I was proud of how our offense executed when we needed it most and just how our team stayed in the game for the whole 10 innings. APU's pitcher threw well against us but we did what we needed to do to get the win."
Game 2: CUI 2, APU 0
Left-hander Rae Flores and righty Cortney Koelmans combined for a four-hit shutout of the Cougars in the second game of the day.
Flores pitched to contact and limited APU from stringing together a big inning. Only three Cougars reached third base the entire game, and one was thrown out at home trying to score on a fielder's choice.
After Flores pitched the first six frames, Koelmans entered to protect a 2-0 lead and notched a 1-2-3 seventh inning that included back-to-back strikeouts. The sophomore earned her second save of the year.
The only runs were scored in the second inning when Lauren Lopez sent a chopper up the middle. Her RBI single scored Missy Nemeth from third and then when the centerfielder bobbled the ball briefly, Rylie Rohr decided to keep going and scored from second base on the error.
The Eagles get the next week off from competition and will play their next PacWest doubleheader on Monday, March 21 when they welcome Chaminade to town. That begins a 12-game homestand against all three Hawaii schools in the conference before the Tournament of Champions in Turlock.
