Though it may be chilly this time of year, a quick and easy smoothie is still one of our go-to breakfast options. After all, it’s hard to resist something you can dump in a blender and drink on the way to work, especially since you can customize a smoothie with all your favorite fixings.
Or you can use a recipe to make your morning smoothie—we love opting for a Pineapple Green Smoothie or a simple Fruit & Yogurt Smoothie. And if you’re a big fan of Olivia Rodrigo (or a big fan of gut-healthy recipes) you can even try her favorite smoothie on for size.
Olivia is the latest celebrity to collaborate with Erewhon, the LA-based health foods store, on a special smoothie recipe that anyone can walk up and order. Her “good 4 ur GUTS” smoothie is packed with fruity flavor and plenty of gut-healthy ingredients, so it’s a fun option for the microbiome-conscious.
Of course, even if you don’t live in Los Angeles, you can still copy this icy beverage at home. The folks over at Erewhon and Health-Ade Kombucha have shared the ingredients list, so you can mix and match these gut-healthy ingredients in your own blender. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Health-Ade's Pomegranate Kombucha
- Strawberries
- Mango
- Blueberries
- Açaí
- Avocado
- Minor Figures Oatmilk (or your favorite oatmilk)
- Nature Nate's Pure Organic Honey (or whatever honey you have on hand)
- Dates
- SIBU Sea Buckthorn Puree
- ION Gut Support
- Sprout Living Epic Protein Chocolate Maca Cacao Powder
- Coconut Whip
Of course, some of these ingredients are more negotiable than others. If you have a preferred protein powder you keep on hand, for instance, you can swap it in for the chocolate variety that Erewhon calls for. And the ION and SIBU products aren’t necessary either, so don’t stress about going over budget on supplements. And remember that most supplements aren’t regulated, so be sure to choose supplements that are third-party certified to help you know you’re actually getting what’s on the label.
You can leave that finishing dollop of coconut whipped cream off, too, if you like, though it would definitely make the drink feel even more like a treat. (Plus, you can make coconut whip at home with just three ingredients.)
But other items, like the kombucha, bring flavor, texture and healthy perks to each sip of this smoothie. Because kombucha is a fermented drink, it offers healthy bacteria that can be beneficial to your gut. Even the oatmilk in this recipe offers a little extra fiber, which can be especially good for your gut. Both the oatmilk and the kombucha also help give the smoothie a smoother, more drinkable texture, so be sure to replace them with a different liquid if you choose to leave them out.
Then there’s the star of the show: the delish blend of fruit. Olivia has chosen strawberries, mango, blueberries and açaí, which you can keep on hand in frozen form for an especially quick smoothie-making process. (You can do the same with the avocado, by the way.) The mango in the smoothie offers some gut-healthy benefits—studies have associated mango with improved digestion and reduced inflammation in the gut. The berries and avocado in this recipe are also tasty, anti-inflammatory ingredients.
If you want to bring this smoothie into your kitchen, it shouldn’t be too tough—just combine about a cup of the frozen fruit and a few avocado chunks with about ½ cup of liquid, add in a date and a touch of honey for extra sweetness, and whir everything up in the blender. Add any powders you’re using and top it all off with a big spoonful of coconut whip. You’ll be sure to have a deliciously frothy, gut-healthy beverage on your hands.
