What can't this ingredient do?

I don’t know about you, but for me, November through February is all about comfort food. I’m talking chilis, soups, casseroles, pastas, or a combination of all four; you name it, I’m making big batches of it all winter long.

And, as much as I love classic comfort meals, I like easy-to-prep and quick-cooking dishes even more. So, if there’s a store-bought alternative that tastes homemade or requires one or two ingredients to make it passable, you can bet your bottom dollar I’m opting for that instead.

Take tomato soup, for example. I will likely never spend the time to make fresh tomato soup—even though it would taste phenomenal—when there are cans and cartons of tomato soup that work just as well. You have to admit, store-bought tomato soup is great for what it is. Could it be better? Sure, and I found a way to do exactly that.

While scrolling through TikTok recently, I saw a hack for upgrading canned tomato soup that only requires one ingredient, and I immediately knew I needed to try it. Let me tell you, I will never go back to plain old canned tomato soup again.

The 1-Ingredient Hack for Making Store-Bought Tomato Soup Taste Better

Jen Curley, better known on TikTok as @snackqween, shared a hack for upgrading tomato soup that she says she makes weekly in the winter. She starts by heating up boxed tomato soup on the stovetop, then adds a spoonful of Boursin cheese and stirs it in. The Boursin melts into the soup and adds visible creaminess in seconds.

Curley uses Boursin’s Caramelized Onion & Herbs variety, but any one of Boursin’s savory cheeses, like the original Garlic & Fine Herbs, Cracked Black Pepper, or Basil & Chive would give the soup that extra punch of delicious flavor and richness.

I used Garlic & Fine Herbs Boursin when I tried it, and it gave the perfect amount of cheesy, garlicky, and herbaceous flavor. I only added a small dollop of Boursin, so as to not overwhelm the natural tomato flavor of the soup, but that’s the best part about this hack—you can add as much as you like.

Texture-wise, it was velvety-smooth without the need for any extra ingredients for creaminess like crème fraiche or heavy cream. Plus, this hack removes the need for flavor-boosting additions like garlic, herbs, and spices. The great thing about using Boursin is that even if you don’t have it in your fridge right now, it’s so easy to find—or make at home—and it adds great depth of flavor to the soup all with just one ingredient.

At this rate, TikTok recipes with Boursin have all but taken over my kitchen. Between the crispy baked appetizer and adding it to pasta dishes, is there really anything Boursin can’t do?
