Breadcrumbs are a pantry staple that does a lot of heavy lifting. They add structure to a batch of homemade meatballs, give a crispy exterior to a cutlet, and can be sprinkled over a salad like crouton confetti.
Depending on what type of breadcrumbs you buy, they may come in different forms. Your breadcrumbs can be coarse and jagged like a tradition panko, seasoned with salt, or even supplemented with herbs and spices. But you’d think that the ingredients list would be fairly straightforward, right?
Wrong. As it turns out, there are a lot more additives in your container of breadcrumbs than you’d think. Australia-based TikTok user @taralouisesmartsavings posted a video this week about a shocking discovery she made while shopping.
In the video, she reveals the ingredients list of the store brand breadcrumbs—and there were a whopping 58 ingredients listed. As if that number isn’t jarring enough on its own, a closer look at exactly what ingredients are in the bag will shock you.
The breadcrumbs included cultured whey, vinegar, fish extract, and fish gelatin. We’re not exactly sure why all those ingredients belong in breadcrumbs in the first place.
TikTok users rushed to the comments section to express their shock. One commenter wrote, “I always look at ingredient but never have with bread crumbs, as just assumed it would be bread crumbs.”
Another asked, “Was it like a competition to see the maximum number of ingredients in one food?”
A few users chimed in with a potential explanation, claiming that brands often make their products with scraps from different types of bread. That extensive list of ingredients includes the ones used in every recipe.
That might help explain some of the list, but fish gelatin? The jury’s still out on that one.
So next time you’re shopping for breadcrumbs at the grocery store, make sure to take a minute to read the fine print. Or just make your own at home.
