FruitSmart's fiber ingredients awarded Upcycled Food Association certification - Nutritional Outlook

FruitSmart (Prosser, WA), a company that makes fruit juices and ingredients, announced that its fiber ingredients have received the Upcycled Food Association’s (UFA) new certification mark. UFA’s Upcycled Certification pilot program launched in 2021, with FruitSmart one of the participating companies. Now, UFA is awarding its certification mark to upcycled ingredients.

According to a press release, “This helps manufacturers meet a growing market need. With 30% of food globally going to waste, 60% of consumers want to buy more upcycled products.”

FruitSmart’s fiber ingredients are produced from leftover materials from the cold-press fruit-pressing process the company uses to make its juices, concentrates, and purees. The company takes the pomace (the pulp, skin, and seeds) left over from the process to create ingredients like fiber. The pomace is air-dried and milled. The company also separates out seeds which are then pressed to make oils.
