JACKSON – It takes an incredible amount of coordination and athleticism to excel as a field athlete.
Whether it’s defying gravity in the pole vault, high jump or long jump, or a show of strength like the discus or shot put, there were some impressive performances last spring by Jackson-area athletes in the field events.
Matt Veneziano of Parma Western captured a state champion in the high jump with a leap of 6-foot-6 at the Division 2 state meet, while Jacob Krutsch of Hillsdale Academy won a state title in the pole vault by clearing 13-9 at the Division 4 state meet.
Veneziano and Krutsch won’t get the opportunity to defend their state titles this spring due to the coronavirus pandemic taking away the entirety of the spring sports season but that won’t stop us from highlighting what could have been. We know there were quite a few returning standouts would have put together stellar seasons this spring but who would have been the best field athlete in the Jackson area?
We won’t have a Selby Track Classic to answer that question this year, so we wanted to ask you, the readers of MLive and Jackson Citizen Patriot, to vote for their top choice for the best male field athlete in the Jackson area.
Readers have until 9 a.m. Friday to vote for the male athlete from the Jackson area that they think would have had the top results in the high jump, long jump, pole vault, discus or shot put.
Here is our list of candidates, compiled from last year’s results from Athletic.net. If we believe we have missed someone, email jvandyke@mlive.com with a name and time to be considered for the poll.
